Nobody likes an empty sofa. That’s why we need cushions to make them alive. Sofas may be your favorite piece of furniture at home, and styling them right can really make a difference to your seating and lounging experience. Whether you own a neutral or bright sofa, a well-rounded sofa needs fluffy and comfy cushions to add comfort and a cozy feel to your family or living room.
Cushions are a super budget-friendly way to give your sofa a makeover and a new look. There are super cute cushions on stores like Target, homegoods, and Ikea under $25 that you can combine to completely transform your space without spending a lot of money. Also, cushions can add a fun element to your sofa, and add a comfy experience perfect for watching TV, Netflix nights, or gathering with friends and family for an afternoon talk. Try different shapes, colors, textures… the sky is the limit!
I recently changed my old neutral beige sofa for this electric blue one I found here, for under $350 (yay!). I already had several cushions with different designs and colors, so the first thing I wanted to do, is making sure they combined together. While there are many different ways to create an eye-pleasing cushion arrangement, here are 5 tips to successfully mix-and-match pillows and style your sofa like a pro.
5 TIPS TO STYLE YOUR SOFA LIKE A PRO
Aim to combine same color family.
If you have 5 cushions, this means at least 3 have one color in common. They don’t have to be exactly the same, but it is important they are within the same family color. This helps the eye to visually group them together as a collection. If they all share a color, the eye will know they belong together.
Stick to an odd number.
Depending on your sofa dimensions. By combining cushions in odd numbers (3, 5, 7, 9) our brain creates a more memorable and pleasing-to-the-eye arrangement. This is especially true at my house because Sebastian (my son) LOVES to dive into a thousand cushions, especially fluffy soft ones. The sofa is definitely his favorite spot at home.
Combine textures and sizes for a balanced asymmetric combo.
By this, I mean a balanced combination of sizes and quantity. You can have 1 or 2 bigger pillows on one side, and 3 smaller ones on the other. I you want to add color to a neutral living room, this is a perfect opportunity to go crazy and experiment! Mix different fabrics, patterns to create a colorful composition.
Mix-and-Match with a color in common.
This is definitely my favorite tip. Pairing different styles of cushions allows you to be fun and creative. My biggest advise: make sure they all have 1 or 2 colors in common. Here is a snap of my own sofa, and I love how the different textures and designs come together by sharing the shades of blue and orange.
Add a unique different element.
I love when sofas include a unique, different kind of accent. Call it a throw, a round-shaped cushion or simply one with a completely different color than the rest. If you have a black and white collection, add a magenta or yellow one, for example.
